Movie Review: "Gravity"

I couldn't sleep, and so decided to watch Gravity last night. It stars Sandra Bullock , and George Clooney (and Ed Harris ) who experience a bit too much "space" on their routine space-walk. Would it grab my attention, or softly lull me to a sweet slumber?

Movie Review: "Wreck-It Ralph"

What happens when the bad guy wants to be the good guy? You get Wreck-It Ralph ! Starring the voice talents of Jack McBrayer , Jane Lynch , John C. Reilly , and Sarah Silverman  we see Ralph journey on a quest to win a hero's medal -- and more importantly the respect and friendship he so desperately craves.

Movie Review: "Interstellar"

Okay the big boys have arrived to make Gravity look more like the popcorn fluff that it was. Interstellar stars Anne Hathaway ,  Jessica Chastain , Matthew McConaughey , and Michael Caine -- so already the acting chops have been increased by an order of magnitude! (Why am I bashing on that very successful movie anyway?) This film is set in the future when the Earth is "dying", and humanity's only hope to avoid extinction is to leave in search of a new planet to call home.

Movie Review: "John Wick"

John Wick sees both the titular character and its star Keanu Reeves drawn back into action. Costarring  Michael Nyqvist , Alfie Allen , and Willem Dafoe , it is a story of a man retired from the world of killing for a living -- but drawn back into it by super bad luck. And it's mostly bad luck for the people who crossed him...

Enlightenment is like the moon reflected on the water. The moon does not get wet, nor is the water broken. Although its light is wide and great, the moon is reflected even in a puddle an inch wide. The whole moon and the entire sky are reflected in one dewdrop on the grass. -- Dogen

Movie Review: "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"

So they finally rebooted TMNT , and gave us the Michael Bay version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles . I immediately had misgivings about such a project and avoided watching it in the theatres even though it "starred" Megan Fox (as April O'Neil) and Will Arnett (as some old guy). But all the main draws were promised: Donatello (the brains), Leonardo (the leader), Michaelangelo (the comedian), Raphael (my favourite -- the bad motherf*cker), Splinter (the sensei), Shredder (the Big Bad Guy), and the Foot Clan (people to get beat up). What's the worst that could happen?

Throwback Thursday

One of my best friends is getting married this weekend, so it's a perfect time to reminisce on the period in time where I formed my closest friendships: high-school! "Fortes in Fide et Opere" was the school motto, or "Strong in Faith and Work".

Movie Review: "Dracula Untold"

Perhaps it would have been perfect to watch Dracula Untold on Halloween, but this first instalment of Universal Pictures' "Monsterverse" wasn't a bad way to start November. Starring Luke Evans as our protagonist Vlad Dracula (AKA: Vlad the Impaler), Sarah Gadon as his wife Mirena, and Dominic Cooper as Sultan Mehmed, this is the story of how Dracula became the vampire we all know and love fear.

Movie Review: "Ghost in the Shell Arise: Border 4 - Ghost Stands Alone"

The last prequel in the series,  Ghost in the Shell Arise: Border 4 - Ghost Stands Alone completes the saga showing the formation of The Major's Section 9 team. All the regular stuff is there: interesting characters, cyber-hacking, gunplay, martial arts fighting, explosions... But the curse of being a prequel seems to have carried on.

Movie Review: "Transformers: Age of Extinction"

Transformers: Age of Extinction is a very appropriate title, for it was the extinction event for what little believability and plot that remained in this series. Oddly enough, this coincides with the cast being its best ever: Mark Wahlberg , Stanley Tucci , Kelsey Grammer , Nicola Peltz , and Jack Reynor (ignore the last two).

Movie Review: "Zero Dark Thirty"

I remember where I was when I heard they'd killed Osama bin Laden -- Bacchanal Jamaica Road March, wining with some attractive ladies -- and there was a lot (more) celebrating on the streets of Kingston that day. Zero Dark Thirty  is the fictionalised story of the CIA's hunt for him, and it stars Jessica Chastain as the hotshot analyst whose sole obsessive focus was finding OBL.
