12 Years a Slave is the incredible true story of Solomon Northrup (played admirably by Chiwetel Ejiofor ), a man who was tricked and sold into slavery. This is an incredibly well crafted film, with excellent acting from Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o (as well as other cast members). If anything can make you truly appreciate being born in the latter 20th century, instead of the 19th century, it is this.

Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.

It's funny, irreverent, and not your typical action/sci-fi/comedy movie -- plus it's got British accents!

Goon is my first surprise movie watched in 2014. A heart-warming tale of a hockey goon/thug played brilliantly by Sean William Scott , written and co-starred by Jay Baruchel , and with an unconventional love interest provided by Alison Pill .

Set in the 1970s, American Hustle is about a pair of con-artists ( Christian Bale and Amy Adams ) who have been recruited/entrapped by a (crazy?) FBI agent ( Bradley Cooper ). His plan is to use them to catch even bigger fish. Hilariousness ensues.
