In the wait for the Avengers: Infinity War conclusion, we get a throwback to the 1990s with a character previously not mentioned in the expansive MCU: Captain Marvel.
Can this film tide the masses over until the next $2B entry in the Marvel Movie Money-Printing Machine?
From Google:
"Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is an extraterrestrial Kree warrior who finds herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and the Skrulls. Living on Earth in 1995, she keeps having recurring memories of another life as U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. With help from Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Captain Marvel tries to uncover the secrets of her past while harnessing her special superpowers to end the war with the evil Skrulls."
Three things about this movie:
1) I think a lot of people who are going to see this expect it to carry on right after Avengers: Infinity War -- they're in for a shock! LOL
2) This movie was so obviously forced into the existing MCU, with some of the ways they try to retcon/introduce new things for the character being rather cringe-worthy. The very last scene in the movie (not the end credits) made me see red.
3) Captain Marvel could be renamed Captain Mary Sue, and incredibly more-so than Rey in the newest Star Wars movies...
So how was the movie? I think it was well-made, and for the most part okay, until points 2 & 3 knocked it down a few pegs. Oh, and there are no major surprises, in fact you generally know more about what's going on than the protagonist...
And many of the jokes fall flat -- my cinema was quiet as a church, which is really saying something for Carib...
The character and the story was just not fully baked.
My recommendation? STREAM IT.
